Amidst the challenge of trying to resurrect my writing and speaking career (which is really not taking off as quickly as I hoped) I’ve been working on writing a book. It’s partway between memoir and manifesto -I was a victim of domestic violence. Freedom is amazing. I want to help other women out of domestic violence to taste the freedom. But I don’t want to do it if it’s going to put them in a worse position than they’re already in.
And that’s where things get messy and scary.
Because right now – the future is not bright for people who escape. Statistically speaking with the programs currently in place – most single mom families end up living near or below the poverty time. And, if some of the stories I’ve been hearing through my interviews for Around the Cauldron and A Man is Not a Plan lately are widespread – only a fraction of the women affected by domestic violence even qualify for the existing programs!
But I don’t think that’s the way it has to be.
I think we can band together and create a grassroots effort to get women and families at risk the information and support they need – but I only have one piece of the puzzle.
I believe that education and entrepreneurship are the most obvious ways out – but but not everyone is capable or willing to take those paths out.
Entrepreneurship is awesome – but it’s not for everyone. I have nothing to offer the people who don’t want the sacrifice and worry and constant learning and expanding that being your own boss requires.
I had a brainstorm halfway through writing this so I’m going to have to come back to it later. Off to create the Love Yourself Extravaganza 🙂
