I chose the topic of destiny because for some reason the Piers Anthony fantasy series “Incarnations of Immortality” flashed through my mind in the moment that I was asked – specifically the third book in the seven book series which centred on the three aspects of fate – and that connected to destiny and so that’s what popped out of my mouth.

As a lover of fantasy books, and at one time an aspiring fantasy author – destiny is a huge part of the plot – and that I’ve discovered once it was safe to venture beyond books and really step out into the real world – in life as well.

Albert Ellis summed it up well when he said “The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny”

You control your own destiny.

How powerful is that.

You control your own destiny.

But how many of us really live it. Really live it out loud.

I’m learning to. But it’s scary. Like jumping out of a perfectly good airplane scary.

And I know there are people like Peter Shankman who get a thrill out of that – but he also seems to have that whole live out loud thing conquered too – but me, I still find it terrifying.

As terrifying as the the thought “What will people think?”

What will people think, and that’s the thing –

I’m learning not to care – and I’m beginning to hope what made the difference in Steve Jobs life will be true in mine he said “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference.”

In the Hindu scriptures of Upanishad it says:

You are what your deep, driving desire is. – As your desire is, so is your will.
As your will is, so is your deed.  As your deed is, so is your destiny.

And the philospher Marcus Auralius makes it seem pretty simple when he says “Adapt yourself to the things among which your lot has been cast and love sincerely the fellow creatures with whom destiny has ordained that you shall live.”

Accept what is, Focus on the Good and Follow Your Purpose.

It’s not that hard to live in line with your destiny when you really stop to think about it.

So I invite you now to raise your glass of whatever beverage you felt was your destiny on this gorgeous spring day – in appreciation of destiny –

May you walk towards yours with wisdom and courage – and remember always who controls your destiny.

To destiny!
